We want to share with you our inspiration for the Gay Games XI Guadalajara 2023 logo.
For this we took some elements of great importance and with great symbolic weight for the LGBTIQ+ community and for the state of Jalisco, host of the Gay Games XI Guadalajara 2023.
Created in 2018 by artist and graphic designer Daniel Quasar, the progressive flag not only features the colors of the “traditional” LGBT+ flag designed between 1978-1979 by Kansas-born artist Gilbert Baker but also includes other colors and elements with the goal of raising awareness about queer people of African descent, brown people, racialized people and those who have lost their lives to HIV/AIDS.
It also incorporates the colors of the trans flag to show solidarity with these populations and vindicate the meaning of the struggle and protest behind the pride flag, as these populations have been invisibilized and ironically were the ones who initiated the protests of the modern LGBTIQ+ rights movement in the United States and the rest of the world.
When we think of Mexico or talk about Mexican identity and culture, some of the most iconic symbols that come to mind originate in Jalisco:
Our logo is a fusion that is inspired by the blue agave plant from which tequila is extracted and the 11 colors of the progressive LGBTIQ+ Flag.
We also added the slogan “Juntxs Creando Historia” (Making History Together), to send a message of unity to the whole world and tell them that for the first time the Games will be held in Mexico and Latin America (as well as Asia), and this event will mark a before and after for our communities.
Therefore, we make history together when we build safe spaces for the LGBTIQ+ community, we make history together when we contribute to a freer, fairer and more equal society for all, and we make history together when we work and recognize all the colors of diversity.
